Princes End High Street, in Tipton, could be closed for up to 19 days while Cadent Gas replaces the gas mains.
The company said it was replacing old pipes with new plastic ones, which would prepare the network for greener gas in future.
The company has secured an order that means the road could be closed until August 11.
It warned residents and businesses that gas supplies would need to be turned off during some of the work, and that its workers may at times be required to access properties.
A diversion has been put in place, and access will be maintained for businesses which will be open to the public as normal.
