Suspected Smethwick tool thief arrested after man arranged to buy tools online - only to discover they were his that were stolen a week before
A man has been arrested and tens of thousands of pounds’ worth of stolen power tools have been recovered following a police operation in Smethwick.
Officers were called to an address in Smethwick on January 23, after a man who had arranged to buy power tools online discovered that the items being offered for sale were in fact his own — stolen from his van the week before.
The discovery was made when the victim attended the address to collect the tools, prompting police to attend.
Officers from the Wednesbury Neighbourhood Team searched the property and recovered a large quantity of power tools, estimated to be worth between £50,000 and £100,000.
A 49-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of handling stolen goods. He remains in police custody while enquiries continue.

Police are continuing their investigation and are working to reunite the recovered tools with their rightful owners.
A spokesperson from West Midlands Police said: "We know the impact of vehicle crime on our communities, on daily lives and livelihoods, and we'll always look to identify and detain anyone involved in offences.
"Reducing vehicle crime is a top priority for the force. We continue to recover stolen property, arrest offenders, and help residents protect their vehicles but we need your help.
"Take important steps to make sure your van, car, or bike is left secure. Simply trying your vehicle's door handle or checking your alarm is on can deter criminals from attempting to break-into your vehicle.
"Be sure to physically watch your vehicle lock before leaving it alone."
