Cause of death of 'loving' mother of six who died at new Midlands Metropolitan Hospital revealed as inquest begins
A two-day inquest has started into the death of an elderly patient who passed away after choking on food at the new Midlands Metropolitan Hospital.
Rashida Sultana, aged 76, of Handsworth, Birmingham, died on November 20, two days after she was admitted to the new Midland Metropolitan Hospital in Smethwick - only a month after it opened.
An inquest, which began on Wednesday (October 1) and is expected to end on Thursday, heard how loving mother of six, Rashida, was taken to the hospital following the concerns of her family that she had had a stroke.
However, only two days later, Rashida tragically choked while eating a bag of chips that her daughters had purchased for her to eat while she was on ward A9.
The inquest, heard by Black Country senior coroner Mr Zafar Siddique, heard about the trust's choking policies, how its guidelines relating to how Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) instructions are applied, and what actions nursing staff should take in the event of a patient choking.
