A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal Smethwick road collision that killed a 62-year-old woman pedestrian

A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving after a 62 year-old woman pedestrian died in Smethwick.

West Midlands Ambulance Service and West Midlands Police have confirmed that a woman pedestrian has tragically died following a road collision in Smethwick, at around 9.26pm last night (Thursday, August 29).

Emergency services responded to calls to the scene at Thimblemill Road to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian and a car.

Police confirmed that a man, aged 35, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving before being taken to hospital for treatment for non life-threatening injuries.

Two ambulances, a paramedic officer, a trauma doctor and a critical care paramedic were dispatched to the scene, where they found the 62-year-old in a critical condition.

Despite receiving advanced trauma care and life support from responding ambulance teams, West Midlands Ambulance Service said that it became clear nothing could be done to save the woman, and she was confirmed deceased at the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "Upon arrival, we found a woman who was the pedestrian in a critical condition. Ambulance staff delivered advanced trauma care and life support to her at the scene. 

“Sadly, it became clear that nothing more could be done to save her, and she was confirmed deceased at the scene."

West Midlands Police said: "We are investigating after a woman tragically lost her life after a collision in Smethwick last night. We were called to Thimblemill Road shortly before 9.30pm after a car struck a pedestrian.

"Despite the best efforts from paramedics the 62-year-old woman was sadly declared deceased at the scene. Our thoughts are with the woman’s family who we are supporting at this difficult time.

"A man, aged 35, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving before being taken to hospital for treatment for non life-threatening injuries.
