'With hard work and determination, you can build your future right here in Sandwell' - Blackheath England and Aston Villa legend Tommy Smart remembered with plaque

A former Aston Villa and England football star who started his career at Halesowen Town was celebrated at a special event.

Tommy Smart, who died in 1968, won five England caps and was said to have a commanding physical appearance on the field. 

He made 405 appearances for Villa between 1920 and 1934 and also played for Blackheath Town, finishing his career at Brierley Hill Alliance.

As part of the Sandwell Story, which champions people from the borough, members of his family and council leader Kerrie Carmichael gathered at the Sons of Rest at Britannia Park community centre in Rowley Regis to unveil a plaque in  the Blackheath born footballer's memory.

Kevin Shoemake from the Birmingham County FA and former Villa defender Kenny Swain were also present at the unveiling
