Hundreds of workers are set a six-to-eight per cent pay rise as part of the move which will cost Sandwell Council £1 million over three years.

The increase would apply to around 150 council employees and 650 school staff.

The Living Wage for next year is expected to be £8.70 an hour, compared with the national living wage of £7.50 for over 25s.

Council bosses are due to discuss the proposals next week.

Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for core council services, Councillor Steve Trow, said: “As a council, we need to support and look after all employees and especially those at the lower ends of the pay scale"
