The move has been welcomed by Kingswinford and South Staffordshire MP Mike Wood, but has attracted an objection from a neighbour.

Mr Wood said community sports clubs such as Wall Heath Tennis Club, which was based at the centre, played a vital role in promoting public health and providing opportunities for people of all ages to stay active.

"Upgrading the lighting would be a valuable improvement and would allow the club to extend playing hours safely into the evening and hopefully improve the uptake of sport locally from young to old," he said.

However. resident Trevor Page, who lives next door to the centre, has objected to the scheme, saying he is concerned that the lights might be too bright at night.

He said the proposed lights would be higher than his upstairs windows, and feared an intrusive effect on the first floor of his home.

An officer from the environmental and safety team recommended that a scheme to minimise the effect the scheme would have on neighbouring homes should be drawn up before any work was allowed to take place.

The scheme will now be considered by Dudley Council planning officers.
