'Wholly inappropriate' or 'a good addition to a lovely pub'? Residents split on new shelter in Halesowen pub garden

A smoking shelter built without planning permission in a pub beer garden will be allowed to stay after neighbours rallied to the pub's support.

The Swan, in Long Lane, Halesowen, has been told it can keep the shelter that was installed without permission after three residents wrote in support.

However, owner Black Country Ales was told that the shelter must not be used after 10pm following objections from neighbours.

Residents Paul Worthington and Tony Dainty, who live immediately next to the beer garden, said the construction was more than a regular smoking shelter, and included a television screen which was transmitting light pollution into his house. They said they were also being subjected to amplified noise as a result of the development.
