The member of the public reported that the dog had been unexpectedly handed to them outside Asda, on Dudley High Street. They said they were handed the dog by a white male who was approximately six foot tall.

She has been nicknamed Zina and is thought to be around two years old, with reddish-brown and white colouring. Zina, who has an unregistered microchip, is now under the care of the local dog warden.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) George Mackie is keen to find out more information about how she came to be in such a poor condition.

“Zina was found in really bad condition, very underweight and with a number of additional health issues.

“We are so grateful to the person who took her to the vets so that she is now able to receive the care she so desperately needs

“We are now keen to find out any information in regards to who may have owned Zina. Our Inspectorate appeal line can be reached on 0300 123 8018 and we'd urge anyone with first-hand information to get in touch. The incident number 01719004 can be quoted.”

Reports of animal abandonment made to the RSPCA have reached their highest point in at least six years. In December alone,  there were 1,919 reports of animals being abandoned.

The pet abandonment surge has led the charity to launch an urgent appeal - The Big Give Back to Animals - which is calling on animal lovers to help raise vital funds to help the charity’s rescuers cope with rising demand for help.
