Two men dead and two injured in Dudley fatal crash

Two men have died and two others injured following a crash in Upper Gornal that forced police to close the A459 in both directions this morning.

The devastating crash occurred at the junction of Highgate Street and Clarence Street, Upper Gornal, Dudley, at 7.32am this morning (August 6). 

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent four ambulances, three paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor and a critical care paramedic to the scene, with a Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford also attending.

On arrival, emergency services discovered five patients, including two men, the driver and passenger of the first car, who were in critical condition. 

Despite the efforts of ambulance staff, it was clear nothing could be done to save the men, and they were confirmed deceased at the scene. 

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Ambulance crews arrived to find five patients. Two men, the driver and passenger in the first car, were in a critical condition.

“Ambulance staff immediately administered advanced life support. Despite their best efforts, it became clear that nothing more could be done to save the men and they were confirmed deceased at the scene.

“A third man from the first car was in a critical condition. He received advanced trauma care before being conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham by land ambulance with medics from the air ambulance travelling on board for continued treatment en route.

“A fourth man, the driver of the van, was assessed and treated for injuries not believed to be serious. He was conveyed to Russells Hall Hospital for further assessment.

“A fifth patient, a woman driver of a second car involved, was assessed and discharged on scene.” 

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We were called just after 7.30am to Kent Street, near to its junction with Spills Meadow, to a collision involving a Ford Transit van, a white Seat and a white Hyundai I10 vehicle.

"Two men, aged 28 and 22, who were in the white Seat were sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A third man from the Seat has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

"The driver of the van was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been discharged."

A road closure and cordon were put into place earlier today, with West Midlands Police advising motorists to take alternative routes of travel. The cordon remains in place as enquiries continue.

Police are now appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed the crash. 

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts remain with loved ones affected.

“We have specialist family liaison officers supporting them at this terrible time.

"We are in the early stages of our investigation, and I would ask that people put all those involved first and do not speculate on the circumstances."
