Gornal Wood crematorium will receive a new entrance canopy, lighting will be installed in the car parks and pathways, and a new fire exit will be added if the proposals are approved by Dudley Council planners.

The present canopy suffers from restricted headroom, planners have been told, resulting in several instances where delivery vehicles have become stuck, damaging both the vehicles and the canopy.

The planning application said the crematorium was built circa the 1950s, and the car park did not have lighting.

It proposed the demolition of the existing entrance canopy, which would be replaced by a new more modern one which would also cover the pedestrian waiting area. Lamp posts would be installed in the car park, and illuminated bollards would light the route to the room which houses the book of remembrance, at the rear of the building.

Three electric doors would also be added, along with a disabled access ramp and a new fire exit to the rear of the cremators.
