Hero youngster gets award after saving friend's life
A young hero who leapt into the water to save his friend from drowning has been presented with an award for his lifesaving efforts.
Morgan Bridgens, aged 10, rushed into action after five-year-old pal William Smith fell into a canal.
The pair were playing on a rope swing when William fell into the water - so nearly ending in tragedy.
Morgan could see William was struggling to stay above the surface and, without thinking about his own safety, the heroic youngster got down on his stomach on the towpath and leant over the side.
Thankfully, William managed to reach his friend's outstretched arms and he was pulled to safety.
Morgan's actions caught the attention of drowning prevention charity the Royal Lifesaving Society UK, which has presented him with a bravery award.
The proud youngster was delighted to receive the Young Persons Certificate of Commendation, which hailed his efforts on the canalside.
The drama happened on Stourbridge Canal, off Longboat Lane in Wordsley. Morgan and William both attend Brook Primary in Wordsley.
Morgan's mother Carly Smart, from Wordsley, told the Express & Star earlier this month: "I’m really proud of Morgan. He has received lots of praise for his actions and it has opened his eyes."
