The amount made from fines rose above the £500,000 mark during 2016/17 as thousands of drivers were made to pay for parking indiscretions to Dudley Council.

A Freedom of Information request has revealed the roads where drivers are most likely to be fined, with High Streets and other town centre roads featuring heavily.

Almost 1,500 penalty charge notices were dished out on Castle Street, Dudley - almost double than on any other street.

Traffic wardens were out in force in the town centre street, which is partly pedestrianised and has double yellow lines, issuing around five every day on average.

The amount brought in from parking fines rose by £65,000 from a year earlier when the council made £473,349.

Unsurprisingly, other town centre roads appeared on the list where most parking charge notices (PCNs) were handed out.

They included Stourbridge High Street, with 851, Dudley High Street, with 747, and Wolverhampton Street, Dudley, where 671 were given out.

Hundreds of fines were also issued on New Street, Dudley, Lower High Street, Stourbridge, and Stone Street, Dudley, figures showed.

The highest earning car park in terms of fines was Manor Park in Kingswinford, where 485 were issued.

A total of 526 PCNs were issued on High Street, Pensnett, near Russells Hall Hospital where visitors have to pay to park.

A total of 9,772 fines were handed out on the top 20 roads and car parks over the 12-month period.

Drivers who fail to pay on car parks or park on double yellow lines and other restricted areas are hit with fines of up to £70.

However, the amount is cut by half if paid within 14 days.

Councils have previously been accused of targeting drivers in order to make more money.
