The site has a guide price of £300,000-plus in the auction taking place next month and sales particulars say it could be developed for residential or commercial use, subject to planning permission.

Cash-strapped Birmingham City Council has been selling off a host of unwanted properties and assets to help with its financial woes - with more than £2.25 million raised from three large properties sold on behalf of the council at last month's auction.

A  cleared site of the former Oscott Manor School in Kingstanding sold for £1.25m from a guide price of £750,000-plus, the former Birchfield Community Day Nursery in Handsworth, listed at £275,000-plus, sold for £625,000 and the former Beeches Goldd Day Centre in Great Barr, listed at £180,000-plus, went under the hammer for £403,000.

Gurpreet Bassi, chief executive of Bond Wolfe, said of the land near the airport: “What we have here is a valuable freehold plot of land which may be suitable for a variety of uses, subject to planning consents.

“This site is at the end of a rural residential street that currently has less than 10 houses, and Birmingham Airport’s runway is literally across the adjacent Coventry Road.

“Houses could be built here, subject to planning, or it’s large enough for a small car park, or even a pub like they have in a similar position at Manchester airport.”

Mr Bassi added that any interested parties must make their own enquiries to Solihull Council planning department to explore any potential use they may propose.

The land will be among scores of lots appearing in the auction, which will start at 8.30am on Thursday February 5 and which will be livestreamed via Bond Wolfe’s website - with remote bidding by proxy, telephone or internet.
