PC Martin Knott and PC Jacob Knott, of West Midlands Police, made the unexpected discovery after responding to reports of an abandoned vehicle in Sparkhill, Birmingham.

On arrival, officers found the untaxed car — and inside it, two frightened but healthy kittens.

The vehicle was recovered and the kittens were taken straight to a veterinary practice for checks, including a search for identification chips.

With no owners traced, the pair were brought back to Moseley police station, where they quickly became the centre of attention.

Officers spent time caring for and comforting the male and female kittens before rallying together to help find them a permanent home.

Their efforts paid off. The pair have now been rehomed by a friend of an officer — and in a touching tribute, the kittens have been named Martin and Courtney, after PC Martin Knott and PC Courtney Reynolds from the neighbourhood team.

PC Martin said: “It was such a surprise to see the two kittens in the vehicle and we knew we had to ensure their story had a happy ending.

“A friend of an officer jumped at the chance to rehome them and have named them after myself and Courtney. We’re delighted.”
