Officers from Operation Skybridge, West Midlands Police's proactive crime team in Birmingham, were on patrol in Selly Oak on Wednesday evening (September 17) when they became suspicious about a car and a motorbike.

Following enquiries, one boy aged 15 was detained at the scene, while another aged 16 was detained later.

Officers learned the bike had been stolen from outside the West Midlands Police area less than half an hour before officers spotted it, with the car, which was on false plates, having been used in that theft.

Cannabis, nitrous oxide, and a large lock knife were also seized from the car.

The 15-year-old was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, taking from a motor vehicle, and possession of an offensive weapon.

The 16-year-old was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, taking from a motor vehicle, and possession of a blade.

West Midlands Police's investigation is ongoing, and Operation Skybridge officers are continuing to carry out proactive enforcement across Birmingham – targeting offenders and disrupting crime.

Sergeant Danny Fulford of Operation Skybridge said: “For local people, the impact of Operation Skybridge is clear. Fewer dangerous individuals on the streets, fewer weapons in circulation, and more visible action against crime.

“The team is not just delivering results but also reassurance – proving that action is being taken to protect neighbourhoods and keep communities safe.

“Our close-knit team work brilliantly together, where we work with communities and gather intelligence to target offenders in each area. Each area gets a bespoke approach so that we are able to tackle their individual areas of concern.

“The community buy-in has been phenomenal, and members of the public have proactively approached us and thanked us for tackling the issues that have been raised. It is great to see the team actively engaging with the community through the WMNow platform.”
