Supermarket goes on fire in Birmingham city centre at 4.30am

West Midlands Fire Service extinguished a fire in a ground-floor supermarket in Birmingham City Centre in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, September 17).

Firefighters were called shortly before 4.30am on Wednesday, September 17 following reports of a fire on Corporation Street, in Birmingham city centre.

Five crews from Highgate, Ladywood, Aston and Perry Barr attended the scene where they found a fire affecting a supermarket on the ground floor of a five-storey building.

The blaze affecting shelving and two fridges was confined to one room, and after extinguishing the fire the final crew left at 8.30am

A spokesman from West Midlands Fire Service said: "Shortly before 4.25am on Wednesday (17 September), we responded to Corporation Street, Ladywood, Birmingham.

"Three fire engines and two 4x4 brigade response vehicles attended, crewed by firefighters from Highgate, Ladywood, Aston and Perry Barr.

"The first crew arrived at the scene within five minutes of being mobilised.

"This was a fire affecting a supermarket on the ground floor of a five-storey building. The fire, affecting shelving and two fridges, was confined to the room of origin.

 "Firefighters extinguished the fire and ventilated the building.

 "The final crew left this incident at 8.30am."
