Birmingham baby death suspect bailed as police force makes referral to IOPC
A 37-year-old arrested after the death of a baby boy has been released on bail pending further inquiries.
West Midlands Police said the woman had been released with strict conditions and the matter had been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) under what the force described as standard procedure.
The woman was arrested on suspicion of neglect after officers were called to reports of a medical emergency at an address in Culford Drive, Bartley Green, Birmingham, at around 4.30pm on Wednesday.
The baby was taken to hospital, where he died.
A statement confirming details of prior police contact at the property said: “Officers attended the address earlier in the morning, where they entered the property and carried out a welfare check.
“We were then called later in the afternoon to reports of a baby having a medical emergency at the address, and he sadly later died.
“The woman arrested has been bailed with strict conditions. Enquiries are ongoing.”
