Five more people die from coronavirus in Birmingham hospitals

A further five people have died in hospitals in Birmingham from coronavirus, new figures have shown.

The deaths were confirmed today at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, with two on Sunday and another three on Monday.

It means the total number of coronavirus deaths at the trust, which runs Queen Elizabeth, Good Hope, Heartlands and Solihull hospitals, to 1,018.

No new deaths were confirmed across the Black Country and Staffordshire, with the total for the two areas – and Birmingham – now standing at 2,629.

Care home deaths in the areas stand at 705, according to data from the Office for National Statistics.

It comes as a further 54 people died in hospitals across England, bringing the total to 30,280.

The death toll at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs Stafford's County Hospital, stands at 361.

Meanwhile, 290 people have died at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, and 268 people have died at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust.

A total of 391 have died at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, and 230 have died at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "A further 54 people, who tested positive for the coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 30,280.

"Patients were aged between 43 and 93 years old. All but one (aged 79) had known underlying health conditions."
