A controlled explosion of the bomb took place at around 3.35pm - forcing police to extend the closure on the M6.

A 13-mile section of the M6 was shut between junctions four for the M42 and the junction 7 for Great Barr for around an hour while the explosion was carried out.

It was reopened at around 4pm but the Aston Expressway was closed until around 6pm - more than 30 hours after it was first shut on Monday.

Meanwhile the M5 was closed at junction 1 for West Bromwich after a man died in a crash with a bus.
