'It's disgusting' - Walsall residents react to Greggs price hike as sausage rolls hit £1.30

Pastry giant Greggs has yet again hiked up its prices, with the nation's favourite sausage roll now costing £1.30 at most sites across the country.

The price of a Greggs sausage roll has increased seven times since 2016, when it cost 85p.

The last price increase was just six months ago when the chain upped the price of the popular pastry by 5p, from £1.20 to £1.25 - and though it might sound like nothing, the pennies certainly add up.

It's not just the sausage rolls that have gone up in price, but the coffee and doughnuts too. A regular coffee has increased by 10p - from £1.60 to £1.70.

In Walsall town centre, Greggs fans are 'disgusted' by the price hike - some say if it gets any higher they will no longer pay for it.

One lady, who wished to be named just as June, said the constant price increases affect pensioners like herself.

"I do like to go to Greggs every so often for a coffee, but they've gone up again by 15p," Joan said. "If you're an old age pensioner and you want to come and have a drink and a walk around, you can't. You just can't afford it.

"The sausage rolls keep going up and it is bad, especially if the kids want a sausage roll and you've got to buy one, two, three of them, it adds up.

"No, it's not good."

Courtney Fry, who was out in town with her mother Rachel Hodgkiss, says she goes to Greggs every day and won't be going back if the prices go up more.

She was already aware of the price increase.

"My son loves them, he has them every day," said the 26-year-old. "They have gone up and it does annoy me a little bit. They were only £1.10 before and I don't really mind paying it but if they went up any more I think I'd stop going. I used to pay 75p when I was a kid, and my kids like them more than anything."

Rachel, 51, added: "It is worth it a bit, but if they went up a bit more then we wouldn't buy them. If it went up to £1.50 or over then we'd stop because its just ridiculous, just for a sausage roll. You want somewhere cheap and nice, but they're taking the micky a bit now putting it up and up.

"Saying that, people are still going in and having them, because they're nice."

Walsall College students Ryan Ward and Uttamjit Singh had just popped in themselves. Although Uttamjit didn't fancy anything, Ryan treated himself to two sausage rolls, and says he isn't fully put off by the price.

"It has annoyed me, the price increase. It's gone from £1.15 to £1.25 and now £1.30," said the 17-year-old. "But I guess it is cheaper than other places."

"They're just trying to rob us, that's all I'll say," Uttamjit added.
