'Is the stadium unsafe?' Nathan Shi put on spot after fan hit by falling metal at Molineux

The incident happened on Saturday

Tension around Wolves has deepened following a troubling weekend at Molineux Stadium after a fan was hit by falling metal.

The incident unfolded during Saturday’s 1–1 draw against Sunderland AFC, when a section of the South Bank had to be partially evacuated after a piece of metal fell from a PA system mounted under the stand’s roof.

The object struck a supporter, who was treated inside the ground for minor injuries and did not require hospital care.

As a precaution, around 200 fans were relocated at half-time, leaving a visible gap in the stand for the remainder of the match.

Footage circulating on social media by Wolves Fancast showed Nathan Shi being pressed over the issue of stadium safety as he walked to his car following the game.

The interim executive chairman was also asked why Jeff Shi had been spending significant time at the club’s Compton training base, and whether ownership group Fosun International had concerns over attendance and infrastructure.

It comes after Wolves began long-overdue refurbishment work at Molineux last summer after supporters voiced concerns.

In response to the incident yesterday, a Wolves spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident at the match where a fixing from a speaker on the roof of the Sir Jack Hayward Stand became dislodged and made contact with a supporter.

“The individual was immediately assisted by our safety team and received prompt treatment from on-site medical staff. Thankfully, the supporter was able to return home after receiving care.

“As a precautionary measure, the surrounding area was cleared of supporters at half-time. Any necessary inspections and repairs will be carried out in the coming days.”
