First coronavirus death reported in Birmingham for 10 days

One new coronavirus death has been reported in Birmingham for the first time in 10 days, NHS figures show.

The death was recorded on Tuesday at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, but has now been included in the latest figures.

However, no new coronavirus deaths have been reported in hospitals across the Black Country and Staffordshire for the 10th day running.

It means the total number of people who have died in the region's hospitals from coronavirus now stands at 2,562 – along with a further 698 in care homes.

It comes as the deaths in hospitals across England increased by nine to bring the total to 29,524.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "A further nine people, who tested positive for the coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 29,524.

"The patients were between 39 and 84 years old and all had known underlying health conditions.

"Their families have been informed."

A total of 382 people have died at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals.

Elsewhere, 287 have died at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross and Cannock Chase hospitals, while 264 have died at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital.

A total of 230 have died at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, while 355 people have died at the University Hospitals of North Midlands Trust, which runs County Hospital in Stafford and Royal Stoke University Hospital.

The death toll at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, the largest in the region, stands at 973. The trust runs the Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals in Birmingham.
