A pre-inquest hearing at County Buildings in Stafford on Thursday (February 19) had revealed that witness statements and CCTV footage show that force was used prior to Rob Spray’s death, a national newspaper has reported.

Mr Spray died in the Bulgarian capital city Sofia in October 2019 after suffering a cardiac arrest while in police custody.

Bulgarian officials reported at the time that Mr Spray, aged 32 of Heath Hayes in Staffordshire, had been initially found in a “helpless condition” before being taken to Pirogov hospital.

As reported in The Telegraph, a date for a full inquest has now been provisionally set for September following the reception of the translated witness statements and CCTV footage.
