Lorry driver Rob Spray, aged 32, from Cannock, had flown out to Sofia for a friend's 30th birthday – and to also watch England play in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

The circumstances around his death on October 14 remain unclear, with Bulgarian authorities saying he died in transit to a police station after earlier being found in a "helpless condition".

A spokeswoman for Staffordshire Police said: "The body of the Staffordshire man who died in Bulgaria on October 14 was flown back to Britain yesterday.

"The investigation by the Bulgarian authorities into his death continues."

Tributes were paid to Mr Spray, who was a West Bromwich Albion supporter, at the Baggies' Championship match at The Hawthorns against Barnsley on Tuesday night.

A petition calling for a full investigation into the circumstances around Mr Spray's death has been signed by more than 14,000 people, while more than £25,000 have donated to a fundraiser set up to support his family.
