The Commonwealth Gold winner and his wife Anita have offered the prized items to Compton Care to help the charity bounce back from Covid-19.

It comes after the Wolverhampton-based hospice was hit badly by the pandemic – with people urged to donate after fundraisers were cancelled.

The couple, both patrons of Compton Care, received media bags through large-scale events they covered over the years as commentators.

Mr Porter said: “If they can generate a few bob it will be money that they need.

"It’s been a sad year for them with no fundraisers and we’ve not had our [Round the Wrekin] sportive and lost a lot of money through that.

"We just wanted to do anything we can really for the charity we love because we’re both patrons of Compton Care.”

Bags from the 1994 and 2006 Commonwealth Games are included – alongside the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. And another gem includes a leather briefcase with the organisation FINA – the international swimming federation – on it.

Ruth Brown, head of fundraising at Compton Care, said: “We are so grateful to Hugh and Anita for their kind donation to Compton Care.”
