The Support Stafford Hospital group is consulting Leigh Day, specialists in clinical negligence, who successfully argued in the High Court to overturn a decision to downgrade services at Lewisham Hospital.

Support Stafford Hospital co-founder Cheryl Porter said they were determined to take their fight to the top if necessary.

It comes after administrators this week unveiled draft recommendations for a £300million axing of Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, with the loss of maternity, major emergency surgery and children's inpatients services.

Mrs Porter said: "We are going to look into taking the legal route." The trust is assuring patients and healthcare partners that it is 'business as usual' while a three-month consultation takes place.
