Stafford Hospital chiefs have denied its A&E department will be permanently downgraded after a leaked letter suggested it would not return to 24-hour admissions.

A letter addressed to nurses in the A&E department said staffing arrangements had to change because it was 'official' the department would not be open for 24 hours.
The memo stated: "We are now officially not going to reopen as a 24 hour department."
But Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust chief executive Maggie Oldham called the letter 'inaccurate' and said no one at the hospital had been privy to information from Trust Special Administrators who will reveal their plans on Wednesday.
