There has been mounting pressure for Sir David to step down following the Francis report into failings at Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust. Cure the NHS founder Julie Bailey delivered a letter to Downing Street calling for him to go.
But the Prime Minister today defended Sir David, who had direct responsibility for the trust as head of its regional health authority (RHA) at the time of the failings from 2005 to 2008.
He said Sir David was doing a "very good job" as head of the NHS and had already acknowledged mistakes made by the RHA and properly apologised for them.
