Black Country flood alerts today: Areas affected across Midlands as rivers stay high

Flood alerts and warnings were in place across the Midlands on Saturday after further wet weather overnight.

As of 10am on Saturday, February 28, a flood warning – the most severe alert issued by the Environment Agency (EA) – remained in force for the Illey Brook at Halesowen. Three flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible, were also active across the region, with river levels expected to stay high throughout Saturday and into Sunday.

Flood alerts and warnings in place

River Sow and River Penk  Flooding may affect low‑lying land and roads along the River Sow between Great Bridgeford and Shugborough, the River Penk between Coven and Stafford, as well as the Sandyford, Rising, Ridings and Saredon brooks.

River Stour and Smestow Brook (Black Country and South Staffordshire)  Flooding may affect low‑lying land and roads around Halesowen, Stourbridge, Wombourne, Kingswinford and Kinver.

River Worfe  Flooding may affect low‑lying land and roads from Crackley Bank to Bridgnorth, including Ryton, Burcote and Worfield.

Illey Brook, Halesowen – Flood warning  A flood warning remained in place after flooding was expected overnight on Friday. The EA said properties and roads around Chadbury Road and Woodman Close may be affected.

EA safety advice

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: “Stay away from floodwater – it contains hidden dangers such as open manhole covers, sewage and chemicals. Avoid using low‑lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses.”
