Crews were called to the house in Wylde Crescent, Rowley Regis, yesterday to tackle the blaze.

The fire started in the rear bedroom of the semi-detached house at around 4.20pm.

People inside the house had got out by the time firefighters arrived.

Two firefighters wore breathing apparatus to allow them to get close enough to tackle the blaze.

Pictures posted on twitter after the blaze show the chard remains of the bed mattress after flames caused damage in the bedroom.

Watch Commander Justin Bayliss, from Haden Cross fire station, said: "The fire was caused by some hair straighteners being left on the bed.

"We want to get that message out there for people to be careful.

"There was quite a lot of smoke damage upstairs so we sort of advised them not to stay there."

He added: "We always advise having smoke alarms as they raised the alarm."

A fire engine from Haden Cross station and a smaller brigade response vehicle attended the blaze.

After the blaze was put out firefighters went to speak to neighbours to get them a safety message.

Crews left the scene around 6.30pm
