Man killed in early-hours smash on Quinton Expressway
A driver died in a crash on a major West Midlands route in the early hours of this morning.
The man was pronounced dead after the smash on the Quinton Expressway, which remained closed during rush hour this morning.
The only car involved in the crash was on fire when emergency services arrived between Junction 3 of the M5 and the Quinton island.
Police closed off the A456 Quinton Expressway as an investigation into the crash was launched.
Drivers were warned to expect heavy delays on the main road which joins Manor Way in Halesowen.
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Claire Brown said: "Ambulance staff arrived within four minutes of the 999 call to find a car which was on fire following a collision.
"Despite the swift actions of all three emergency services, sadly nothing could be done to save the motorist, a man, and he was confirmed dead on scene.
West Midlands Police spokesman Craig Hughes said: "Police were called to reports of a single-car collision on the Quinton Expressway, Quinton, at around 2.40am today.
"A man has been confirmed dead and his family have been informed.
"The road remains closed for drivers heading into the city as investigations continue."
