It happened on the northbound carriageway between junctions 3 and 2 and around 3.40pm on July 14.

Pc Claire Byrne, from the force's Collision Investigation Unit, said: "The motorway was fairly busy at the time and I am very keen to hear from any motorists using the M5 who may have seen what happened or have any information to contact me."

The motorway was closed for hours after the accident, before all lanes were opened again at around 7pm.

Four members of St John's Ambulance who had been on a driver training course came across the smash and stopped to help.

Both carriageways were closed to allow emergency services to safely work to treat the injured rider.
