Neighbours called 999 to alert firefighters to Bower Lane, Quarry Bank, fearing a fire at the semi-detached house.
When crews from Brierley Hill fire station arrived they found smoke bellowing from the chimney at around 11am.
They discovered soot deposits had set alight in the chimney.
Crews used ladders to reach the chimney before sending a hose down to spray a fine water jet onto the flames.
Watch commander Mick Clarke said: "Several people had been concerned that the house was on fire after seeing the smoke so they called us in. It was quite difficult to extinguish."
Crews were at the house for around two hours.
