Lamppost knocked over after Wolverhampton A449 crash

A woman was taken to hospital after a road smash on one of the busiest routes into Wolverhampton.

The woman's silver Vauxhall Astra is believed to have been in collision with a black Mercedes, before hitting a traffic light and then a concrete lamppost at 5.20pm last night.

The crash at the junction of the A449 Stafford Road and Springfield Lane, near to the Moreton Arms Pub, knocked out the use of the traffic lights.

Police on the scene closed a section of the Stafford Road heading towards the Vine Island which resulted in tailbacks as far as junction two of the M54.

Springfield Lane was also closed while the vehicles were recovered.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the crash had left the lamppost lying across the road. Engineers were on site accessing the damage to the traffic lights.

Both sides of the Vauxhall was had dents following the impacts with the Mercedes left with considerable damage to its front.

West Midlands Police spokesman Pete Edney said: "We were called to the scene at 5.20pm to reports of a road traffic collision between the two vehicles. A lamppost had been knocked over a woman has been taken to hospital as a precaution."
