Three others were hurt and the motorway closed in both directions after two cars collided between junctions T5 at Shenstone and T6 at Burntwood just after 4pm yesterday.

The force of the impact sent both cars careering off the carriageway and on to the embankment.

Sarah Gardner, 39, from Leyland in Lancashire, was travelling in the front passenger seat of the Audi S3 and suffered serious head injuries.

She was airlifted to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham but later died in hospital.

The back seat passengers of the Audi, an 11-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, remain at Good Hope Hospital with relatively minor injuries.

The driver of the car, a man, escaped unhurt.

The female driver of the second car, a VW Polo, was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital for treatment, but has since being discharged.

Firefighters from Aldridge were called to the scene to assist.

Crew commander Pete Finazzi said: "It was nasty collision. We helped to extricate the patients from their vehicles due to the nature of their injuries."

The collision occurred on the northbound carriageway.
