Fire investigators have not ruled out arson as a probe continues in to the blaze which ripped through a disused factory unit in West Bromwich.

More than 50 fire fighters tackled the blaze at its height at the former European Commercial Pressings Ltd base in Holyhead Road.

The crews were called to the blaze next to West Bromwich Albion's The Hawthorns stadium just after 4.30am yesterday.

Fire crews from West Bromwich, Smethwick, Wednesbury, Oldbury, Tipton, Ladywood, Handsworth, Aston, Perry Barr and Highgate attended.

They pumped water from a nearby canal to fight the flames. Throughout yesterday fire officers dampened down the building and investigators examined the scene, trying to establish the cause of the blaze.

The overall structure of the building is believed to be safe, but the majority of material inside which included cardboard and wood was destroyed.
