Wolverhampton students join in world's biggest drum lesson

A new Guinness World Record has been set for the world's largest drumming lesson which included school children from Wolverhampton.

A total of 1,827 students were involved – 224 from Wolverhampton – which was live streamed via YouTube from London to Wilkinson Primary School in Bilston.

Students aged seven to 11 drummed along, in an event co-ordinated by the Wolverhampton Music Service.

Sarah Fletcher, assistant headteacher at the Wolverhampton Music Service, said: "We see lots of opportunities to get involved with projects but this one really stood out.

"It's a great chance to raise awareness for Street Child United and we've raised money for them too.

"It was fantastic to be part of it, I've never done anything like this before and we'll be looking to run similar events in the future. It's great for all the children to be involved in a momentous project like this."

Pupils from Wilkinson Primary, St Paul's Primary, St Michael's CE, Bilston CE, Stowlawn Primary and Westcroft Special School took part.

They drummed along with students who they could see by video link at the Copper Box Arena in London.

They will all receive certificates acknowledging their participation in the world record breaking event.

The 'Bang the Drum' event was held in support of UK charity Street Child United. The charity aim at using the power of sport and art to challenge the perceptions and treatment of school children worldwide.
