Work starts on £12m Dudley College development
Dudley College students got to show off their construction skills to Nick Boles MP who visited the campus for the launch of the new £12 million Advance II centre.
The new state-of-the-art construction building is due to open in Spring 2017 and will be the first college of its kind specialising in the latest construction techniques, technology and off-site fabrication.
Mr Boles, who is Minister of State for Skills, spoke to engineering apprentices while on a tour of the existing Priory Road site. He donned protective glasses and college overalls to take part in practical tasks alongside the students.
College principal, Lowell Williams, said Mr Boles was exceptionally interested in the students and their work.
He said: "It was a fantastic visit and he was keen to get involved and speak to our apprentices. He was exceptionally interested in the work they were undertaking and even had a hands-on experience programming a machine. When speaking to employees he said he was highly impressed with the equipment we have at the college and wished it was in every college throughout the country."
The Advance II will be built alongside the £9m Dudley Advance building that was opened early last year.
The new 37,000 sq ft build will include workshops, classrooms, project spaces, resource areas and welfare and support facilities around a four-storey building called The Hanger.
