Fight to save school is lost

The battle to save Sneyd Community School has finally been lost after councillors rubber-stamped the decision to close it.

Walsall Council's decision-making cabinet last night gave its approval to controversial proposals to shut it within three years despite opposition from parents, pupils and teachers.

It emerged last year education chiefs wanted to close the school in Vernon Way, Bloxwich, due to standards and a falling pupil roll. But an improvement in exam results this year was not enough to halt the plan.

Willenhall North representative Councillor Ian Shires said it was a "sad day".

"If you study the secondary school strategy for the borough it seems to suggest the closure of Sneyd was in the minds of some well before the consultation," he said.

Walsall Children's Services education managing director Tony Stainer said: "We will do everything possible to mitigate any need for redundancies."
