The year 1969 found the Black Country in the midst of considerable change, as its industrial heritage met the demands of a modernising region. Across Dudley, Stourbridge and Brierley Hill, familiar Victorian chapels and Georgian townhouses were being demolished to make way for new roads, pedestrian shopping precincts and improved housing estates.
Industry remained at the heart of local life, with steelworks and manufacturing businesses continuing to produce goods for markets around the world. Meanwhile, communities carried on with everyday life, from shopping in familiar high streets to celebrating local achievements and enjoying the area's canals and countryside.
This collection of archive photographs takes you back to Dudley and its surrounding areas in 1969. Which pictures bring back memories for you? Share your thoughts in the comments.

26. A fresh start for Green Park Road
Sporting crisp new render and freshly painted woodwork, renovated show houses stand ready for public inspection on Green Park Road, Dudley, in December 1969. Part of an ambitious seven-year scheme to modernise 7,000 pre-war council properties across the borough, the pilot homes were overhauled after severe flooding earlier that year, trading cramped downstairs wash houses for newly partitioned upstairs bathrooms and larger modern kitchens. Did you ever catch the special weekend coach from Fisher Street to view these show houses, or remember when your own estate was upgraded during the council's improvement drive? | Express & Star archive

Pictured together are Nurse Miss J Baker, male nurse M Carrier, and nurses Miss J Jenkins and Mrs E Smith, gathered in their crisp uniforms to celebrate hard-earned qualifications and nursing dedication. Were you ever treated on the wards by the caring staff at the Guest, or do you remember attending a nursing badge ceremony like this in Dudley? | Express & Star archive
