Dudley MP and deputy mayor join veterans aboard the 'Poppy Train'

The train is a tribute to the fallen

An MP joined veterans, Royal British Legion (RBL) volunteers and local dignitaries at a Black Country railway station to mark a special national remembrance event as two Dudley veterans boarded the Poppy Train on its journey to London.

Dudley MP Sonia Kumar and deputy mayor of Dudley Councillor Adam Aston were among those who took part in a short ceremony at Sandwell & Dudley railway station, organised by the RBL’s Poppy Appeal.

The initiative saw an empty railway carriage begin its journey at Glasgow Central before travelling south to London Euston. At stations across the country, veterans, reservists, and volunteers joined the train to poppies to a wreath, creating a powerful symbol of remembrance that grew throughout the journey.

Also taking part were Dudley veterans Roy Whitehead, a former Royal Marine commando, and Ian Rawlings, who served in the Royal Navy, who boarded the train, dedicated to ‘The Unknown Soldier’ and adorned with a special poppy livery.

Both men continued their commitment to public service after leaving the forces, going on to work as firefighters serving their local community.

The veterans were also joined by Rose Cook-Monk, Dudley’s Poppy Appeal organiser, on the Avanti West Coast train.

Miss Kumar said: “It was a real privilege to meet Roy and Ian and to be there as they boarded this special train of remembrance.

“Both men have dedicated their lives to serving others, first through their service in our armed forces and later as firefighters protecting communities here at home.

“They represent the very best of Dudley. Their service, sacrifice and continued commitment to helping others is something our whole community can be proud of.”
