It was one of the most influential bands in rock history, on the brink of becoming a global phenomenon – and 35 years ago today, Nirvana took to the stage at Wolverhampton's Wulfrun Hall.

On November 6, 1991, Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl brought their UK tour to the city, just weeks after the release of their landmark second album, Nevermind.

With tickets costing just £6.50, fans packed into the Wulfrun Hall for a performance that would become a memorable chapter in Wolverhampton's musical history.

The Seattle grunge band were rapidly gaining momentum, with Smells Like Teen Spirit helping propel them towards international stardom.

And Wolverhampton audiences were treated to a setlist featuring some of the group's most recognisable tracks, including Lithium, Breed, Come As You Are and Smells Like Teen Spirit.

The performance also featured songs from the band's debut album Bleach, including School, Negative Creep and About a Girl, plus a five-song encore.

Just months later, Nirvana would be among the biggest bands in the world, with Nevermind reaching number one on the US Billboard album chart in January 1992.

The band's rise would ultimately be cut short by Cobain's suicide in April 1994, making performances such as their Wolverhampton appearance an enduring part of rock history.

Now, 35 years on, the gig remains a reminder of a time when one of the world's most influential rock bands could be seen in Wolverhampton for just £6.50.
