Cooked dinners at a care home being controversially shut in the new year are to be scrapped two weeks before elderly residents move out, it emerged today.

Meals on wheels will be delivered to the eight remaining pensioners of Underhill House in Bushbury as they await its closure on January 15.

The Underhill Lane facility is home to 106-year-old Louisa Watts, believed to be Britain's fifth oldest woman.

It is set to close on January 15. Wolverhampton City Council said today the kitchens will serve their last hot meals on January 2 with the loss of three staff.

Only snacks and will breakfast will continue to be made at the home, while pensioners' main meals will be delivered.

Mrs Watts' son Derek Watts, aged 76, of Wednesfield, said: "The kitchens should not be closed while the home is open."

Wolverhampton North East MP Ken Purchase said he had asked health secretary Andy Burnham to investigate.

Bosses say shutting the home will save £240,000.
