Diesel hits 333mph - and it's a JCB!
Staffordshire-based JCB was celebrating today after its team broke the land speed record for diesel-powered vehicles.
The JCB Dieselmax yesterday became the world's fastest diesel-powered car, beating the previous record by almost 100mph.
Driven by Wing Commander Andy Green, the car hit a top speed of 333mph and averaged 328.767 mph, smashing the US record of 235mph which has stood for more than 30 years.
The JCB team behind the British bid was due to make a further attempt to raise the record today, after yesterday's two runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah.
Stepping from the car, Wing Commander Green said: "This is exactly what we came to do today - this is British engineering at its absolute best. We have the fastest diesel in the world."
Project director Dr Tim Leverton said: "To have built the world's fastest diesel is a stunning achievement for the whole JCB Dieselmax team.
"Our goal was to set an official record in excess of 300 mph and we have achieved that, and more. The success is a tribute to everyone who has worked so tirelessly and with such passion to make JCB Dieselmax a world beater."
