Murder trial: Staffordshire baby died from 'significant head injuries'

Five-week-old Darcy-Leigh Jefferson died from significant head injuries, a jury has been told.

Amy Clarke, aged 34, of Lichfield, and Sean Jefferson, aged 35, of Walsall, are standing trial in Stafford accused of murder after their daughter was found not breathing at an address in Hudson Drive, Burntwood on March 27, 2022.

Giving evidence for the prosecution on Wednesday at Stafford Crown Court, forensic pathologist Dr Charlotte Randall gave the cause of death as head injuries.

She said said the baby showed signs of multiple episodes but "ultimately" it was the "head injuries which caused her collapse and subsequent death".

Dr Randall also told the jury that no young child could have caused the "level of injury" sustained by Darcy-Leigh.

The jury had previously heard that in a police interview the defendants appeared to suggest that other children connected to the family may be responsible.

The victim also suffered  47 rib fractures and fractures to both legs along with bleeding to the back of her eyes. The prosecution claims that the baby suffered a 'catastrophic' brain injury after being assaulted by one or both of her parents .

Clarke, aged 34, of Enots Close, Lichfield, and Jefferson, aged 35, of Lichfield Road, Rushall, Walsall, both deny murder and causing or allowing Darcy-Leigh's death.

The trial continues.
