Sarbjit Sahota, aged 64, lived with his wife at Telford Gardens, Wolverhampton but the relationship had long since broken down and he slept on the sofa as he didn't have anywhere else to go.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard he was at home with his wife on June 17 last year and she was ironing her work clothes ready for a shift when she couldn't find her charger and asked him whether he had it, suspecting he was drunk.

Gary Cook, prosecuting, said: "When she tried to reach her bag, he grabbed it and hit her hard across the face and verbally abused her, saying a number of times 'you will die today and you will die now'.
