Three charged over disorder in Birmingham where police officers were assaulted
Three men have been charged with various offences after officers from West Midlands Police were assaulted while responding to disorder in Birmingham.
Atif Ali, 30, Nasif Ali, 32, and Ali Hamza, 21, all from Birmingham, are due before Birmingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
All are charged with affray, while Atif Ali is also charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker, assault by beating, and possession of an offensive weapon and Nasif Ali is also charged with possession of a knife, intentional strangulation, and criminal damage.
West Midlands Police said the appearance at court comes after officers were called to reports of disorder near Matlock Road shortly after 12.15pm on Monday and were attacked at the scene and suffered injuries from which the force said they are recovering.
Speaking after the incident, Birmingham Police Chief Inspector Jim Mahon said: “In Birmingham and across the region, attacks on officers represent attacks on our communities, which is why we don’t hesitate in dealing robustly with those who do assault police.
“The completely unacceptable violence that these officers suffered stemmed from previous violence they had been called to deal with, and we are carrying out a full range of enquiries into this.
“We are aware of video footage showing the incident, and this is being reviewed as part of the investigation.
“Local officers remain in the area to offer reassurance, and I would urge anyone with concerns to speak to them.”
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Anyone who saw what happened, or has information that could help our enquiries, should contact us on 101 or via Live Chat on our website quoting log 2267 of February 23.
