Smethwick man detained under mental health act after judge rules insanity caused brutal attack on mother
A man has been detained indefinitely under the mental health act after a judge ruled insanity had caused an attack which left his mother for dead.
Judge Barry Berlin KC made the ruling on Tuesday at Wolverhampton Crown Court during sentencing for Jonan Walker, who had been accused of attempting to murder Ursula Lawrence at a property on St Paul's Road in Smethwick on March 25 last year.
The judge ruled that Walker, 18, of St Paul's Road, was not guilty of attempted murder and wounding with intent by reason of insanity and ordered Walker to be detained on a hospital order under Section 41 of the Mental Health Act.
Walker had been on trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court accused of attempting to murder his 56-year-old mother, who was already suffering from ill health.
