The arrest came following a specialist West Midlands Police 'Project Guardian' patrol in Wolverhampton on Tuesday night, where officers focused on tackling knife-related crimes.

While on patrol in the Whitmore Reans area, a boy on an e-bike attempted to make off from officers near Staveley Peace Park; however, he was later detained.

Following a search, officers recovered a knife, which was seized for further examination.

Further searches also resulted in a quantity of suspected cannabis being recovered.

The 16-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possessing a blade and drugs. He remains in custody as enquiries continue.

During the same patrol, officers spotted another man looking to avoid officers in Queen Square in the same city at around 5pm.

On engaging with him, officers found he was wanted by the Wednesfield neighbourhood team on suspicion of theft at a shop in Silverton Way, earlier this month.

The 52-year-old was detained and has been charged with theft.

Darren Haynes is due to appear at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court today.

A force spokesperson said: "We are working to reduce robbery and knife-related crime across the region with dedicated officers on our Project Guardian teams patrolling and carrying out operations in areas where we know there are increased reports of knife-related activity."
